Southbound Turnpike traffic blocked at Admire interchange after wreck near Emporia service exit
Law enforcement authorities are investigating after a reported injury crash northeast of Emporia on Saturday afternoon. The wreck was reported around 3:15 pm at Kansas Turnpike mile marker 134 southbound, or seven miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate and two miles northeast of the Emporia service exit. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, Emporia/Lyon County EMS and a medical helicopter responded.

Grace United Methodist Church hosts successful Kicks 4 Kids shoe giveaway
Grace United Methodist Church held its annual Kicks 4 Kids shoe giveaway Saturday, bringing much-needed footwear and other essential services to local children. "About seven years ago, a youth group of junior high and high school students recognized a need in their schools," said organizer Russ Conrade. "Some kids couldn't participate in gym or PE because they didn't have the proper shoes, or any decent shoes at all. It started as a way to help them and has just grown from there. It’s an opportunity to reach out and share a little bit of God's love with those around us."

As August approaches, teachers and staff will be headed back to the area schools. We wish for everyone to have a great school year. Some former staff members are going to be experiencing retirement for the first time. Emporia Area Retired School Personnel invite you retirees to become a part of our group. We promote educational, social, health, professional and economic issues in our area. We also encourage volunteerism through personal contributions and community service group activities. It is a great group for fellowship and friendship. We meet the second Friday of every month in the large meeting room at the Emporia Recreation Center at 11:45. All retirees (not just the ones from this year) are invited to attend. We have a meal, a program, and a short business meeting. Recent retirees will be receiving a personal letter of invitation soon.
