    Deadly Pike County wreck 1 of 4 Independence Day holiday fatal crashes

    A deadly wreck in Pike County Saturday was one of four fatal crashes responded to by the Mississippi Highway Patrol over the 2024 Independence Day Holiday Travel Period.

    The Thursday-Sunday period saw MHP issue a total of 6,474 citations, make 149 arrests for impaired driving, and cite 876 motorists for occupant restraint violations. In 2023, 4,458 citations were issued, 508 motorists were issued restraint violations, and 53 DUI arrests were made.

    Over the 2024 period, Troopers also investigated 141 crashes, which resulted in 45 injuries, and four fatal crashes that resulted in four deaths. The fatal crashes were in Pike, Pearl, Scott and Sunflower counties. In 2023, there were 76 crashes, and also four fatal crashes resulting in four deaths.

    On Saturday, July 6, at approximately 5:34 p.m., Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Hwy. 51 in Pike County.

    A 2018 Jeep Wrangler, driven by 40-year-old Dustin Denton of Tylertown, was traveling north on the highway when it left the roadway, collided with a tree and overturned. Denton suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

    On Independence Day, Thursday, July 4, MHP responded at approximately 11:39 p.m. to a crash on Hwy. 13 in Pearl River County.

    A 1994 Jeep Wrangler, driven by 19-year-old Troy Hughes of Lumberton, was traveling south on the highway when it collided with a 2023 Toyota Camry, driven by 23-year-old Jocelin Sanchez of Tylertown, traveling north. Sanchez received fatal injuries from the crash, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

    On Friday, July 5, at about 5:17 p.m., Troopers responded to a crash on Interstate 20 in Scott County. A 2002 Dodge Ram, driven by 51-year-old Steve Epps of Jackson, was traveling east on the interstate when the vehicle ran off the roadway into the median and collided with a tree. Epps suffered fatal injuries, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

    At approximately 7:37 p.m., Troopers responded to a one-vehicle crash on Hwy. 3 in Sunflower County.

    A 2002 Ford CVR — driven by 40-year-old Kenneth Willies of Memphis, Tennessee — was traveling north on Hwy. 3 when it left the roadway, collided with a ditch and overturned. Willies received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

    All four crashes remain under investigation by MHP.
