KCCD to pay $2.4 million to ousted professor Matthew Garrett in settlement agreement
The Kern Community College District will pay former Bakersfield College professor Matthew Garrett $2.4 million plus $154,520 as compensation for back wages and medical benefits since Garrett’s dismissal in April of 2023. In a settlement agreement dated July 18, 2024, Garrett, a tenured history professor agreed to drop all further legal action against KCCD. The agreement stipulates that Garrett will not be returning to his former teaching position.
Borel fire threatens Bodfish, Lake Isabella
As Kern River Valley residents near the one week mark of the Borel Fire the loss of property and homes and the uncertainty of what’s next is on everyone’s mine. An accident last Wednesday in the Kern River canyon closed Highway 178 and started the destructive inferno now known as the Borel Fire. The highway remained closed as of press time. The driver, yet to be identified, died at the scene.
