Duke wins Emergency Response Award
July 2, 2024 - The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) recently presented St. Petersburg-based Duke Energy with its Emergency Response Award. A panel of judges recognized Duke for its efforts before, during and after Hurricane Idalia, when widespread outages affected nearly 200,000 customers. The award, presented to the company at EEI’s annual meeting in June, followed an international nomination process.

AUXPAD: USCGAux paddle safety program
Paddlesports have surged in popularity in recent years due in part to the increased market availability of inexpensive paddlecraft. The sport’s growth has also contributed to an increase in paddler fatalities. To address the need for boating safety education within the paddling community, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary created a program called the Auxiliary Paddlecraft Program, or AUXPAD. AUXPAD originated in the USCG Auxiliary 5th District-Northern Region from a paddling safety program called the D5NR Paddle Craft Operator Program before going national in 2015.
New paid internship program will give Brewing Arts students hands-on industry experience
In partnership with the Tampa Bay Brewers Alliance, the Brewing Arts program at USF St. Petersburg is launching a paid internship program. Available to nearly all students of the certificate program, the internships will provide $15 hourly pay and cover insurance costs during the 60-to-80-hour requirement at a selected brewery. Each will be designed for students to learn core skills in the art of brewing and understand business operations.

Tampa Bay has three ‘Entrepreneurs of the Year’
July 2, 2024 - International accounting firm Ernst & Young has named a local banker, beverage industry executive and health care consultant as Florida’s Entrepreneur of the Year. Ken LaRoe, CEO of St. Petersburg-based Climate First Bank; Bill Lombardo, CEO of Clearwater beverage flavoring company Monin; and Eric Reimer, CEO of Tampa’s Healthmap Solutions care management platform, earned the distinction. The trio and six others from the state will now participate in the national Entrepreneur of the Year awards in November.
