Georgia Power is monitoring the forecast and expected path of what is anticipated to be Tropical Storm Debby and is prepared to respond to damage and potential power outages that could be caused by damaging winds, heavy rain, excessive lightning and hail. Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday to be celebrated with Ga. musical gala
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Carter Center announced Thursday a musical celebration in conjunction with its founder’s upcoming 100th birthday. “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song” is set for Sept. 17, 2024, at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, and will feature artists performing live tributes and special guests celebrating former President Jimmy Carter’s Carter’s legacy of service. Tickets are $100 — in honor of Carter’s 100th birthday — and are available to the public at here starting at 10 a.m. Aug. 5.
Georgia woman describes horrors of giving birth in prison
ATLANTA -- A tearful Georgia woman told a U.S. Senate subcommittee a harrowing story Wednesday of giving birth while serving a five-year sentence in a state prison. Jessica Umberger, who now serves as a care navigator for the Policing Alternatives & Diversion Initiative in Atlanta, said she was forced to undergo a Cesarean section against her will because she had had one 18 years earlier. She gave birth to a daughter, Jordan, in August 2018 at the state Department of Corrections' Helms facility in Atlanta.
GBI Investigates Fatal Shooting of Jackson Man at Butts County Event
At the request of the Butts County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are investigating the death of Jason Maughon, age 44, of Jackson, Georgia. On July 14, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Butts County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting incident on the 200 block of Peoples Road in Jackson, Georgia. The shooting occurred during an event at the location. Jason Maughon was shot and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Five charged in sextortion-related money laundering scheme
Five people have been charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering in a sextortion scheme that resulted in the death of a Marquette teen. The defendants from Georgia and Alabama are accused of receiving money extorted from more than 100 men and boys online… then tried to disguise the dirty money as clean.
