NCWRC announces totals for 2024 wild turkey harvest
Results from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s (NCWRC) 2024 Wild Turkey Harvest Summary report show that hunters recorded 24,074 birds harvested statewide in 2024, including 2,372 birds taken during the youth season. North Carolina, especially the Raleigh metro area, is witnessing rapid population growth. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals that The Triangle has seen one of the largest increases in retirement-age residents nationwide since the pandemic. The number of retirement-age residents has soared by 18.3 percent in Raleigh and over 15 percent in Durham since 2020, nearly doubling the national growth rate.
North Carolina Wildlife Officers Lauded for Lifesaving Response to Child's Injury at Lake Norman
Two North Carolina Wildlife officers, identified as Officer Eric Burkhalter and Sergeant Brandon Lyon, are being acknowledged for their prompt assistance to a 3-year-old girl who sustained a serious leg injury at Lake Norman. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. last July 5, while the officers were on boat patrol near McCrary Creek. Approached by a distressed family, the officers found the mother cradling her daughter, who had a severe laceration on her leg. QC News reports that Burkhalter, who had received Tactical Combat Casualty Care training while serving in the U.S. military, managed to promptly apply a tourniquet to stem the bleeding.
Level 1 risk: Severe storms could be damaging winds to some areas
The NC weather forecast calls for a level 1 risk of severe storms from the Triangle and up toward Virginia. Another heat advisory is also in place from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.Damaging winds will be the main threat from isolated severe storms that pop up.Afternoon highs will be anywhere from 93 to 97, with feels-like temps of 105 to 109.The good news is this will be the last day of our current heat wave. The bad news is this will be the start of a wet few days.Over the next seven days most areas in North Carolina could see up to 4 inches of rain.It all begins with a slight chance for rain, including heavy downpours, Wednesday afternoon. Thursday then starts dry but again the afternoon brings an elevated chance for rain and storms.Friday is the day with the highest chance for rain this week.
