Man killed in Piru after apparent assault

One man was killed Saturday evening in an apparent assault in Piru near Warring Park, authorities said.

Ventura County Sheriff's Senior Deputy Wendell Campbell said deputies received a call around 5:30 p.m. about an injury traffic accident and a separate call from Ventura County Fire Department for mutual aid.

Deputies arrived in the 4000 block of Center Street where fire crews were assisting two men suffering from injuries. One of the men, the driver of the car, was later pronounced dead, Campbell said. Only one car was involved in the incident.

The other man was transported to a local trauma center, and he was in critical condition when he left the scene, Campbell said.

The sheriff's major crimes unit is investigating the death as a homicide.

As of 10 p.m. Saturday, no arrests had been made, Campbell said. It was not immediately clear if anyone else was involved in the incident or if the men knew each but investigators were interviewing witnesses, he said.

On Sunday, sheriff's Capt. Ken Truitt said the incident may have arisen when a driver was doing doughnuts in the dirt near a family barbecue.

The initial investigation indicates a confrontation resulted and the car may have hit a few people, Truitt said. The driver reportedly got out of the car and a confrontation followed. The driver died from injuries suffered during the confrontation, he said.
