Piscataway Student Performs at Pride Month Celebration at Governor’s Mansion

PRINCETON, NJ -- Jada King, a rising 11th grader at Piscataway High School, delivered a captivating poetry performance at Drumthwacket, the governor's mansion, during a Pride Month celebration earlier this month.

King performed her poem, "Angry Black Woman," at the June 17 event, which she developed in her creative writing class at PHS. Although she is still undecided on her career path, exploring new interests weekly, her talent in poetry has become evident.

King is a member of the Changemakers group, which participates in various camps and events aimed at promoting positive change.

The invitation to perform at Drumthwacket came about through a connection with one of the governor’s aides, who is married someone involved with the camps King attends, said her father, Courtney King.

The aide heard one of King’s poems and arranged for her to participate in the Pride Month event.

"It was an incredible experience,” said the younger King. “I wanted to share this moment with others who might never have the chance to see something like this."

The celebration at Drumthwacket highlighted diverse voices and talents, with King’s performance standing out as a significant moment in the event, they said.
