PISCATAWAY, NJ – Piscataway celebrated America’s independence with a parade and boat race, and backyard barbecues, activities, and fireworks on Thursday.

Residents in the township’s Lake Nelson section held their annual 4th of July parade through area streets, complete with firetrucks, township officials, and families who waved to onlookers as they marched along the route.

Neighborhood children rode their bikes, scooters, and wagons in the parade, decorated with American flags and sparkling red, white, and blue streamers. A number of pets joined in the fun, some dressed in patriotic themes to match their humans.

At Byrne Park on Woodland Road, parade organizers awarded prizes for the most festively decorated before Lake Nelson families took to the water to compete in the annual boat race. Boaters paddled canoes and kayaks around the lake’s fountains, with Team Hallberg taking home first place.

Over at East Jersey Old Towne Village in Johnson Park, history buffs explored colonial-era buildings that depicted Middlesex County's historic past, including the long-vanished port community of Raritan Landing and the site of the First 4th of July celebration, and could see a stone carver, printer, Revolutionary War soldiers, and other historical interpreters in action.

Later, fireworks lit up the Piscataway night skyline after thousands enjoyed the township’s annual family festival at Piscataway High School.

The festival featured food and ice cream trucks in the loop at PHS, and balloon-making and carnival rides for the children.

When the sun went down, so did the lights in Kenny Armwood Stadium. Families filled the stands and the field as they cheered for the fireworks display that could be seen all around.
