NEW BRUNSWICK - A 20-year-old Edison man has been sentenced to five years in state prison in connection with a high-speed Piscataway crash last year in which a Carteret man was killed.
Ahmadsabir Ashaq was sentenced July 19 by Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Sheree V. Pitchford to five years in prison subject to the No Early Release Act (NERA), which means he will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
In addition Ashaq will be on parole supervision for three years on his release from prison.
Ashaq pleaded guilty March 28 to vehicular homicide, a second-degree crime.
Around 1:41 a.m. June 3, 2023 Piscataway police responded to Stelton Road and Mindy Lane on a report of a motor vehicle crash. When officers arrived they found two vehicles involved in a crash, a Lexus sedan driven by Ashaq and a Ford Focus driven by Shailesh Gurrapu, 24, of Carteret.

Police determined the Lexus struck the Ford, then hit a utility pole and caught fire. The Ford sustained serious damage and also caught fire. Gurrapu was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ashaq and his passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment.
An investigation by Piscataway Patrolman William Kloos and Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Detective James Alleva indicated Ashaq was driving more than 110 mph on Stelton Road just five seconds before colliding with the Ford Focus as it was turning onto Mindy Lane, the prosecutor's office said.
