Police Union President Named To Peace Officer Standards Panel
The president of the Richmond police union has been appointed to the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Benjamin Therriault, a sergeant in the Richmond Police Department, was named Friday to the panel, which sets minimum selection and training standards for California law enforcement. Alameda Man Charged With Killing 5 Family Members Has Plea Delayed Again
The man suspected of fatally shooting five members of his family at their Alameda home this month had his arraignment delayed Monday for a second time. Shane Killian, 54, is now expected to appear in court on Aug. 30 on an array of charges, including murder, elder abuse, firearm and domestic violence-related offenses. He is being represented by the Alameda County public defender’s office, which declined to comment on Monday’s proceedings or the reason for the postponement.
Woman wins Wine Country half marathon for first time
A woman won the Wine Country Half Marathon in Sonoma on Sunday for the first time in the event's 20-year history, organizers said. It was a great day for girl power, with veteran runner Liza Reichert winning in one hour, 19 minutes and 28 seconds in the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon.
College admission getting more and more competitive for students
The class of 2024 faced record competition during this college admissions season as acceptance rates at top colleges continued to decline. At the University of California, Berkeley, the acceptance rate fell from 17.5% in 2020 to 11.6% in 2024 – according to the UC system – continuing a gradual decline spanning at least three decades. Berkeley received 88,064 applications in 2020 and 125,910 in 2024.
