Pittsburgh Technical College in ‘danger of imminent closure'
According to the Middle States Commission of Higher Education, the accrediting agency that placed Oakdale-based Pittsburgh Technical College on probation several weeks ago, the institution is in “danger of imminent closure.” <\p> MSCHE on Thursday alerted Pittsburgh Technical College that it would need to “show cause,” by June 28 why its accreditation should not be withdrawn. The action comes following a team visit by representatives of the commission to the campus in May.<\p>

Why this Pittsburgh-based biotech firm had a strong week
BlueSphere Bio, a UPMC Enterprises spinout and Pittsburgh-based drug development company, logged a big week in its development with a clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a collaboration with the National Cancer Institute.<\p> The company received investigational new drug approval to begin clinical trials and the first human dosing of a cell therapy to treat leukemia. The T-cell receptor therapy, known as BSB-1001, was developed from its own development platform known as TCXpress that analyzes millions of T-cells to determine a molecule that can treat oncological and other conditions. The T-cells are killer cells that are designed to eliminate cancerous cells in the body, based on a certain characteristic or type of cell.<\p>
Weaver Industrial gets PIDA loan for 2 new warehouse/office buildings
Weaver Industrial Inc., which is constructing two buildings at Bushy Run Corporate Business Park in Export, was approved for a PIDA loan though the Economic Growth Connection of Westmoreland.<\p> The 10-year, $844,680 loan at a 4.25% reset interest rate was announced by Rick Siger, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Weaver Industrial, a real estate development firm, will use the loan to assist in the construction of two 12,000-square-foot, single-tenant warehouse/office buildings. The total project cost is $2,111,700, and the buildings already have prospective tenants. It is expected that 27 new, full-time jobs will be created.<\p>
Mr. Magic Car Wash cleans up with latest deal, enters Ohio
Pittsburgh-based Mr. Magic Car Wash has acquired Coates Car Care, entering Ohio and bringing its total number of sites to 23 across three states. <\p> Coates, based in Niles, Ohio, added six locations — five in Ohio and one in Hermitage, north of Pittsburgh — and 99 employees, increasing active employment by about one-third to 305.<\p>

Three Rivers Arts Festival boasts new layout this year
It took a four-hour drive across Pennsylvania, over $1,000 for accommodations and an almost-sleepless night setting up his tent, but by midday on June 5, Neil Claypoole was finally ready to start selling handmade wooden spoons at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts festival.<\p> Having made it through the always-chaotic load-in process, the second half of the festival, which runs May 31-June 9, is now in full swing. Those who stopped by during its first six days can go back this weekend and see an entirely new set of artist's work. Vendors say they expect a successful weekend of sales as organizers try to return the festival to its pre-pandemic success and experiment with a new layout.<\p>
Koppers marks opening of Louisiana utility pole plant
A $17 million plant in Louisiana that peels and dries timber for utility poles is up and running for Pittsburgh-based Koppers Holdings Inc.<\p> Koppers is a big producer of utility poles and the plant, in Leesville, Louisiana, plays a vital role in that. The timber that becomes utility poles than go to another Koppers plant in Somerville, Texas, for treatment with the company's preserving chemicals. The finished utility poles go to Texas and the Midwest.<\p>
Pittsburgh-area restaurant among sites Red Lobster looks to close
Western Pennsylvania was spared the initial list of 50 restaurants Red Lobster plans to close. But if its reorganization plan is approved, more will follow. <\p> The Orlando, Florida-based chain has released an expanded list obtained by CNN that includes a North Hills site. <\p>
ARM Institute issues report on impact of AI and robotics on workforce
As robotics and artificial intelligence continue to be implemented across the industry, a new report from the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute concluded that "preparing the manufacturing workforce to work alongside these technologies will require a collective effort from educators at all levels."<\p> "One misperception that we're constantly battling is the misperception that robots are taking jobs," Annette Vickers, ARM Institute senior research manager, said. "Robots are just another tool. AI is just another tool to do your job. Jobs will change with the advent of robots but it's not taking jobs away from the plant. It might take away doing some of the dirty, dull and dangerous jobs but then you will have a different role to play. Now that you have a robot online you have other opportunities and other positions in relation to the robot."<\p>
Innamorato, Lee introduce new plan to address affordable housing
“Being poor is not a moral failing, it’s a policy failure,” said Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato Thursday in front of gathered press and other local leaders.<\p> She spoke as she, along with U.S. Rep. Summer Lee, Mayor Ed Gainey and other local officials, unveiled the "500 in 500" plan — a program to move unhoused people into affordable homes.<\p>
Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority plans $60M in replacement work
The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority will begin $60 million in water main and lead service line replacements in Pittsburgh this summer.<\p> A $30 million contract to Independent Enterprises Inc. is set to replace in Squirrel Hill and Brighton Heights about 4.1 miles of water mains, 219 public lead service lines and 187 private lead service lines.<\p>
Michael Baker International acquires disaster-management firm
Michael Baker International announced Thursday it had acquired MLU Services Inc., an Athens, Georgia-based disaster management and logistics company.<\p> Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. MLU will become a part of Tidal Basin Group, which is owned by the Pittsburgh-based Michael Baker. Tidal Basin Group and Michael Baker provide management and services for governments and companies to prepare for, sustain during and respond and recover from disasters. MLU provides logistics and disaster response.<\p>

The Bank of New York Mellon Corp. announced a bundled offering delivered through Pershing that enables financial advisors to access the full breadth of capabilities from across BNY Mellon's leading platforms. That includes BNY Mellon Investment Management and BNY Mellon Advisors, the international financial services company said at its INSITE conference.<\p> This enables clients such as registered investment advisers, broker-dealers and banks to use multiple solutions provided by BNY Mellon at a discount, realizing up to 40% in savings. U.S. News lauds UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside for equity care
UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside was among a little more than four dozen hospitals nationwide to receive honors for its care of underserved populations.<\p> The Pittsburgh hospital was one of only two in Pennsylvania and the only in western Pennsylvania to receive U.S. News & World Report's recognition as a Best Regional Hospital for Equitable Access. It's a new ranking from the magazine, which gave only 53 of the recognitions and there were only hospitals from 26 states.<\p>
