Southpointe developers continue working to build a "sense of place"
After a history as one of the original founders of the six million-square-foot business park in Washington County, Rod Piatt recalled knowing what he didn't want Southpointe to be.<\p> That's the kind of business park not uncommon in western Pennsylvania typified only by separated office buildings developed on scattered plots with their own parking.<\p>
EQT, Equitrans set date for shareholder vote on acquisition
Shareholders of EQT Corp. and Equitrans Midstream Corp. will vote separately July 18 on EQT's proposed all-stock acquisition of the Canonsburg-based pipeline company.<\p> EQT (NYSE: EQT) will hold its special shareholders meeting at 8:30 a.m., July 18, followed a half-hour later by Equitrans (NYSE: ETRN) at 9 a.m. Both votes are important in the EQT's plans to acquire Equitrans, which built, will operate and partially own the Mountain Valley Pipeline among other natural gas gathering and long-haul pipelines.<\p>
Triangle Tech announces closure after 80 years of operation
Triangle Tech, a trade and technical school headquartered in Pittsburgh with six locations throughout Pennsylvania, is closing its doors after 80 years of operation. <\p> That’s according to an announcement the school made on Wednesday, June 5.<\p>
Insurance giant Gallagher just acquired a Pittsburgh-based agency
Insurance giant Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. has acquired Pittsburgh-based Crawford Insurance LLC. <\p> A retail insurance agency, Crawford provides personal and commercial lines to customers in Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. It will remain in its current location under the direction of Sean Gallagher, head of Gallagher's Great Lakes region retail property and casualty brokerage operations. Terms of the transaction were not released.<\p>
Horizon Properties to establish new Baxter's R-Cade at Southpointe
Rod Piatt is preparing to plug a new entertainment attraction into a vacant former restaurant space at Southpointe Town Center.<\p> Look for the new Baxter's R-Cade to open In the vacant former space of Steel Cactus at 1800 Main St. this September, as Piatt, Piatt, CEO of Horizon Properties Group LLC, works to add a new amenity for the surrounding collection of offices, hotels and a neighboring apartment complex.<\p>
Citizens names Pittsburgh nonprofit a 'Champion in Action'
Citizens Financial Group on Thursday named 1Hood Media Academy a Champion in Action and the recipient of $50,000 in unrestricted funding.<\p> The Pittsburgh-based nonprofit was honored for its efforts to prepare students and workers for in-demand digital and technology jobs.<\p>
IP team joins Eckert Seamans from Dentons Cohen & Grigsby
Eckert Seamans has added a five-member team of intellectual property specialists from Dentons Cohen & Grigsby, the law firm announced on Thursday.<\p> The group is led by Noland Cheung, who joins Eckert as a member. Cheung had chaired the IP practice at Dentons Cohen & Grigsby, Pittsburgh’s fourth-largest law firm. He also served as U.S. co-chair of the firm’s IP group and as U.S. Region co-leader for Life Sciences and Health Care. <\p>

Community leaders introduce new vision plan for downtown
The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development on June 5 jointly announced a new vision plan for downtown that’s designed to help convert the Golden Triangle from a commuter-focused urban office hub into more of a live-work-play destination. <\p> The plan calls for creating “connective corridors” downtown that will, according to a release, better utilize the region’s assets, including its rivers and iconic bridges; create “thematic connections to successful civic anchors in adjacent neighborhoods;” and encourage residential growth. <\p>
Pitt awarded more patents and moves up in university ranking
Two local universities are among 100 in the nation that received the most patents in 2023, and it's Pitt that has moved into the top 15.<\p> The University of Pittsburgh received 114 patents last year and was ranked No. 14, according to a list the National Academy of Inventors published in June. That was nine more than Pitt was granted in 2022.<\p>
New restaurant from Given to Fly owner will replace closed Station
Troy Beck is preparing to open a new restaurant in Bloomfield in place of the former Station restaurant.<\p> "The concept is more Pittsburgh than it is food," Beck said. "It's more of a passion project than it is anything else."<\p>
RIDC announces phase 1 completion of Re:Build Manufacturing facility
More than a year after Boston-based contract manufacturer Re:Build Manufacturing announced that it would be setting up its first production facility in New Kensington in Westmoreland County, phase 1 of the project has reached completion.<\p> That’s according to an announcement from the Regional Industrial Development Corporation of Southwestern Pennsylvania, which, along with the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corporation, purchased the 1.1 million-square-foot New Kensington Advanced Manufacturing Park, once owned and operated by Alcoa, where the facility is being constructed. <\p>
CMU's Entertainment Technology Center is getting a new director
Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) will have a new director as of Sept. 1.<\p> Derek Ham, who is currently head of the Department of Media Arts, Design and Technology at North Carolina State University, will take over the role from professor of interactive media Drew Davidson.<\p>
Wesco International acquires software company for $30 million
Wesco International Inc. announced Wednesday that it had purchased software company entroCIM for an initial purchase price of $30 million. <\p> Wesco is a Fortune 500 company with more than $22 billion in sales. The company has about 20,000 employees globally and is taking on 18 employees from entroCIM. Wesco, a leading provider of business-to-business distribution, has about 800 branches and it has warehouses and sales offices in more than 50 countries, according to a release.<\p>
Landlords’ financials draw increased scrutiny from tenants
As billions are set to mature within commercial real estate-backed loans, tenants are putting extra scrutiny on prospective landlords' financial wherewithal before signing leases.<\p> And while a preference for the newest or most-updated office towers that offer a bevy of amenities remains prevalent among tenants, so too is the appeal of leasing space from a landlord with limited or even no debt on the building.<\p>
PNC Bank ups the ante with $120,000 enhanced scholarship program
PNC Bank on Wednesday introduced an enhanced program that will award $10,000 scholarships to 12 students attending or planning to attend college across the country.<\p> PNC's existing, decade-long scholarship program currently awards $2,000 scholarships to 12 students each year. This enhanced program builds on the successes of the current program and provides students with additional resources to help make their dreams of higher education a reality.<\p>
