Back to school at CMU for PNC execs to study data science, AI
AI, AI, oh. Pittsburgh's biggest bank wanted to make sure executives were well-versed in the transformative world of data science and artificial intelligence. So, PNC Financial Services Group Inc. (NYSE:PNC) collaborated with Carnegie Mellon University, also based in its headquarters city, to co-develop and deliver an inaugural initiative, the executive data science program, effectively investing in its own people.<\p> Some 25 executives from various core business functions at PNC were schooled in the multi-day curriculum, which covered areas such as AI fundamentals, generative AI and the future of work, and voice analytics. <\p>
Heinz Endowments gifts Point Park Center for Media Innovation $250,000
The Heinz Endowments approved a $250,000 grant to Point Park's Center for Media Innovation as part of the center's "Next Generation Newsroom" initiative. The program is designed to support local news outlets and journalists early in their careers. <\p> "The Heinz Endowments is proud to support the Next Generation Newsroom initiative as part of our ongoing partnership with Point Park University's Center for Media Innovation," Matt Barron, program director for sustainability at the Heinz Endowments, said in a prepared statement. "Robust local journalism is crucial to a healthy and thriving community and we appreciate the Center for Media Innovation's commitment to equipping young journalists with the tools they need to navigate a rapidly changing sector."<\p>
UPMC Children's Hospital expands pediatric liver transplant program
UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is expanding its pediatric liver transplant program to include a hospital in North Carolina.<\p> The Pittsburgh-based hospital will be working with Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital to strengthen its ability to transplant livers in infants and toddlers. UPMC Children's Hospital began the first comprehensive pediatric transplant center in the United States in 1981 and has a strong program with more than 1,800 pediatric liver transplants to date.<\p>

Bonnie Plants Blairsville facility to close, WARN notice reveals
A plant nursery in Blairsville, east of Pittsburgh, is closing in less than two months, affecting 65 jobs.<\p> Bonnie Plants LLC filed a WARN notice with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry that said it is closing the facility at 1477 Power Plant Road, effective Aug. 1.<\p>
NeuBase Therapeutics takes new approach to dissolution vote
After two unsuccessful attempts to get shareholder approval to dissolve the company, NeuBase Therapeutics is trying once again, with a difference.<\p> NeuBase (Nasdaq: NBSE) set a June 26 date for a special shareholder meeting to approve the company’s dissolution plan the board said was the best alternative moving forward after it stopped all biotech development in August 2023. Two tries, May 13 and May 22, adjourned without getting enough votes for dissolution. The company’s rules said that a majority of the 3.7 million shares outstanding needed to vote for the approval.<\p>

Most top-performing companies are proving to be open and transparent about pay at a time when workers increasingly expect it.<\p> That finding comes from compensation data and software provider Payscale Inc., which recently analyzed companies that beat their own revenue goals to find what they had in common. <\p>
Milhaus gets started on 272-unit Nox project in Robinson Township
Milhaus is underway with its next project in the Pittsburgh area.<\p> The Indianapolis-based firm announced that it has broken ground on what it is calling the Nox, a 272-unit multifamily development slated for 10 Urbano Way in Robinson Township, a shopping-dense stretch the developer is working to establish as a home for a major influx of apartment dwellers.<\p>
Motion & Control Enterprises announces a Pennsylvania deal
A Zelienople company that’s an avid acquirer has marked its 4th deal so far this year and, after a string of buys in the south, notched the latest in its headquarters state.<\p> Motion & Control Enterprises on Monday said it has acquired Ives Equipment Corp., based in King of Prussia, near Philadelphia. <\p>
Personalities of Pittsburgh: Carl Daley, Highmark Health
Carl Daley is EVP, chief financial officer and treasurer of Highmark Health, a Pittsburgh-based health care organization with more than $27 billion in revenue and ownership of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and Allegheny Health Network, among other entities. Daley has extensive experience in the health care industry, including 12 years at health care giant Humana. Prior to that, he worked in a number of accounting roles for Big Four accounting firm PwC. He first joined Highmark Health last September.<\p> What got you into health care? After the economy dipped in 2008, I moved back to Louisville, Kentucky [where he is from] for PwC, and I didn’t necessarily want to move again, and I didn’t necessarily want to be a partner, although I love PwC. I started looking at careers that would be long-term and in industries that were interesting and meaningful and around Louisville. That’s what drew me to health care. What kept me around is the purpose, the higher purpose of improving the lives of our members and patients. Having that little bit of higher purpose and mission aspect to the work is really meaningful and powerful to me. <\p>
Viatris divests active pharmaceutical ingredient business in India
Viatris Inc. on Monday closed on the divestiture of its active pharmaceutical business in India.<\p> The business was sold to Matrix Pharma Private Ltd., a privately held division of Indian pharmaceutical company IQuest Enterprises Private Ltd. The deal included six manufacturing sites, a research and development lab and third party sales and had been struck on Oct. 1, 2023.<\p>
Highmark atop List of Health Insurers in Pennsylvania
Highmark Inc. continues to be the largest health insurance company operating in the state of Pennsylvania, the only one with more than $10 billion in asset volume based on 2023 data.<\p> Highmark, which also includes Keystone Health Plan West, Blue Cross of Northeastern Pa., HMO of Northeastern Pa. and Highmark Select Resources Inc., had $10.83 billion in admitted assets at the end of 2023, almost double that of No. 2 Independence Blue Cross based in Philadelphia, which had $5.99 billion.<\p>
Pennsylvania to receive $28M to help clean up abandoned mine lands
Pennsylvania and West Virginia will each receive $28.67 million this fiscal year of funding from the U.S. Department of the Interior to help clean up abandoned mine lands.<\p> The funding, from the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) program, goes to the six Appalachian states and three tribes that have programs. Kentucky will also receive $28.67 million in 2024 with $11 million each going to Alabama, Ohio and Virginia. The Crow and Hopi Tribes and Navajo Nation will each get $3.67 million.<\p>
