Sy Holzer, PNC exec and Pittsburgh community leader, dies at 75
Sylvan “Sy” Holzer, a corporate and civic leader whose more than four decade career at PNC Financial Services Group Inc., culminated by serving as president and CEO of its Pittsburgh region for 19 years, passed away on June 16 at age 75.<\p> He is survived by his wife Cathy, two children, five grandchildren and his brother.<\p>
Aurora CEO, writing on AI alignment, notes other companies' 'faux pas'
In a recent publication from Aurora Innovation Inc., CEO Chris Urmson discussed artificial intelligence alignment and noted "various AI faux pas" from other companies, including one from Google, his former employer.<\p> AI alignment is the aim of ensuring that AI systems are steered towards a person or group's intended goals. Alignment has historically been a researched and debated topic going back to the origins of the field in the 1950s and 60s, but widespread discussion has grown extensively in recent months following the rapid expansion of the industry.<\p>
Senator urges widening of clean-energy tax credit to spur development
Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey on Friday wrote a letter to the secretary of the U.S. Treasury and the Department of Energy, and urged them to allow tax credits for current and former fossil fuel projects aimed at clean energy production in Appalachia.<\p> The tax credit for clean energy set out in the Inflation Reduction Act was hoped to include nonrenewable sources of clean energy, including the oil and gas industry, to jump start a hydrogen and clean-energy revolution in Appalachia. Many projects that are being contemplated for Pennsylvania and West Virginia, including some of the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2), are contingent on the tax credits that will make it easier and cheaper to move forward with the capital.<\p>
Blank Rome hires software firm in-house lawyer turned acting GC
Blank Rome LLP said Gavin Eastgate has joined its Pittsburgh office as of counsel in the commercial litigation practice group.<\p> Eastgate, a seasoned antitrust and competition lawyer, had been acting general counsel at TeleTracking Technologies Inc. since last November, capping almost four years at the Pittsburgh-based health care software company.<\p>
Hard Rock Cafe featuring Pittsburgh-inspired burger at all locations
Pittsburgh, or at least at Pitts-burger, is going global. <\p> That’s thanks to the Hard Rock Cafe, which is debuting a lineup of five locally developed and culturally inspired burgers on its menu at all of its 300-plus locations across the world. Included in that lineup is a Pittsburgh-inspired burger, the only U.S.A. representative to be included.<\p>

Grafe Auction selling off contents of rue21's headquarters office
The discount scanvengers have another week to browse the selection of mannequins, printers, file cabinets, cubicle farm accoutrements and other sundry merchandise totaling 673 auction items in all up for sale out of the soon-to-be former headquarters office of rue21 in Warrendale.<\p> All of the items are available for bidding on the website of Grafe Auction, based in Minnesota. <\p>
Abridge partners with Texas-based health service provider
Following a months long pilot program, Abridge signed an enterprise-wide agreement with CHRISTUS Health, a Texas-based health system, the latest in a series of advances for the NVIDIA-backed artificial intelligence company.<\p> The AI technology transcribes and then documents conversations between clinicians and patients. A survey conducted alongside the pilot program found that 78% of clinicians noted a reduction in cognitive load and 40% reported a decrease in feeling burnt out.<\p>
UPMC paid $17M in deferred compensation to former CEO in 2022
UPMC paid former President/CEO Jeffrey Romoff more than $17 million in the calendar year 2022, the year after he retired after a long career at the Pittsburgh-based health organization he led through extraordinary growth over the last several decades.<\p> Romoff's $17.8 million compensation included $8.6 million in bonus and incentive compensation along with $9.2 million in other reportable compensation, according to a federal tax document UPMC filed last month and previously unreported. That means Romoff, who retired as of Aug. 1, 2021, after a career at UPMC that stretched back to 1973, was by far the highest-paid employee or former employee of the Pittsburgh-based nonprofit health care organization in 2022. It was about $6 million higher than his successor's compensation in the same period. The financial data, though reported through June 30 of 2023, is for calendar year 2022.<\p>
BNY colors its logo a new way and, no, it's not melon
The Bank of New York Mellon Corp. didn’t just shorten its brand to BNY, the logo was also tweaked.<\p> The logo changes include a more modern font, a refined arrow and a distinctive teal color. The new shade comes after more than a decade of steely metallics. <\p>

A home in Sewickley is currently for sale for $2.95 million. <\p> The home is listed with Molly Howard of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. It is located at 224 Thorn St., on a part of the street that Howard said is often referred to as "the parade route," where the Sewickley Memorial Day parade is held and where neighbors often gather for "porch parties." <\p>
Mountain Valley Pipeline goes into operation after tumultous decade
After a decade of development and court battles that included a literal act of Congress to achieve all the federal approvals, the Mountain Valley Pipeline is now in service.<\p> The 303-mile pipeline takes natural gas from Pennsylvania, via a connecting pipeline, from West Virginia to Virginia and markets in the southeast. The pipeline began operations this week for short-term natural gas transportation before its contracted, long-term natural gas carrying begins July 1.<\p>
Penguins, Live Nation reveal revised design of concert venue
The "pivot" of the Pittsburgh Penguins' development team to move forward with a new 4,500-capacity performance venue to the Lower Hill now includes its partner Live Nation on board to design and oversee its development.<\p> The development point man for the Penguins was joined by the design manager for Live Nation in presenting a new design and strategy approach for the new venue to the regularly scheduled June board meeting of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh on Thursday, showing a new black-clad facility to replace the former design.<\p>
F.N.B. wins big for digital prowess at Banking Tech Awards
F.N.B.'s eStore has claimed a new honor. It was named Best Digital Initiative at the 2024 Banking Tech Awards USA as F.N.B. was recognized for successfully implementing a technology-driven customer banking initiative with a digital proposition at its core.<\p> F.N.B. Corp. (NYSE:FNB) is the second-largest bank headquartered in Pennsylvania according to assets, which were $46 billion, or 5th in the Pittsburgh metro by deposit market share. F.N.B., which develops its technology in-house, aims to create a single customer experience that spans its physical and digital delivery channels.<\p>

Feds add new initiative to build commercial traffic on local waterways
The federal government is beginning a new push to diversify the moving of freight along the region's waterways and associated economic development.<\p> The Interagency Working Group on Coal and Coal Power Communities, a group made up of several federal agencies to help spur development in legacy energy committees, has been empowered by the Senate Fiscal Year 2024 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill to come up with new ways to use the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela rivers where the traditional moving of coal has declined in recent years.<\p>

Most Americans struggle to get away from work while on vacation, even as some progress is being seen in restoring work-life balance.<\p> About 59% of the 2,000 Americans surveyed by communications firm Movchan Agency said they struggled to switch off during their downtime and 63% said they felt anxious if they didn’t check work emails while away. Overall, 54% said they worked while on vacation, although that's a lower share than previous years. <\p>
Moonshot Museum appoints new executive director after long search
Pittsburgh native Jimyse Brown will serve as the second executive director of the Moonshot Museum, Pittsburgh's space museum.<\p> "Becoming the first African-American Executive Director of a space museum in Pennsylvania and the first globally focused on career readiness for the 21st century space industry is a milestone I hold close to my heart," Brown wrote on LinkedIn. "I stand on the shoulders of those who have come before me, breaking barriers in civil rights, education, community engagement and various professional sectors."<\p>

One of the handful of winners of the PA SITES funding can tell you first-hand that it makes a big difference.<\p> That project is the Windy Ridge Business & Technology Park, a 200-acre site in White Township, Indiana County. The Indiana County Development Corp. first acquired the site in 2010 and received several rounds of RACP monies for development of the site, which now includes a 958,000-square-foot Urban Outfitters Inc. fulfillment center.<\p>
