    Derek Shelton.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton was ejected at a pivotal point in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the New York Mets when he took exception to a strike call that was so bad, that it left both teams' broadcasters utterly baffled.

With the Pirates trailing by three runs, outfielder Jack Suwinski was called to pinch hit with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

That at-bat resulted in him striking out on a 3-2 pitch from Reed Garrett. But that decisive swing only came after home plate umpire John Tumpane made two extremely bad strike calls earlier in the at-bat to completely change the situation for both Garrett and Suwinski.

Here's the Pirates' broadcast on which play-by-play man Greg Brown nearly had a complete meltdown after the 3-1 call that Suwinski (rightfully) thought was ball four.

Even the Mets' broadcast team of Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez were shocked by that call.

You know a call is bad when the announcers on the positive end of it are baffled by it.

The calls significantly changed the inning. Had Suwinski walked, the Pirates would have cut the deficit to two runs and still had the bases loaded with only one out. It would have been a big opportunity to completely swing the game back in their favor.

As bad as those calls might have been, the Pirates still have to acknowledge the fact that their offense has not been consistently good enough this season, and that they had other missed opportunities on Saturday. Still, calls that are that bad are not going to calm the waves of people yelling for automated strike zones in Major League Baseball.
