Pittsburgh Pirates select Army graduate Derek Berg in Major League Baseball Draft

Army catcher and infielder Derek Berg was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Major League Basebal Draft. Berg was a tenth-round choice and No. 294 overall.

A May graduate, Berg also played first base and second base for the six-time Patriot League champions. His 15 home runs tied for the team lead. He batted .396 during the regular season and finished on a 28-game on-base streak. He was a first-team all-Patriot selection.

Army has 21 players selected all-time in the MLB Draft. Current Cincinnati Reds player Jacob Hurtubise was the last player chosen in 2019 by the Seattle Mariners, signing a free agent deal a year later. Berg is the highest draft choice since left-handed pitcher Nick Hill was chosen by the Mariners in the seventh round and No. 225 overall in 2007.

The Pirates previously chosen Army catcher Chris Simmons and outfielder Cole White in 2008.

The Major League draft started Sunday and concludes Tuesday.
