A restaurant in Downtown Pittsburgh has been ordered closed by the Allegheny County Health Department for the second time this year.

Caravan on Smithfield Street, in the central business district, was ordered closed on Wednesday after inspectors found 10 violations, including three considered “high-risk”.

The high-risk violations include a live mouse found in the basement, along with mouse droppings on stairs and a large amount founder under a stairwell and by the back door of the warewashing room.

Cut cherry tomatoes and other food items temped at 50 degrees or higher in a prep cooler. Food must be held at 41 degrees or lower.

Another high-risk violation observed was an employee rinsing gloves in a sink and failed to change their gloves after he used his phone.

The location was also operating without a health permit.

“the owner has had multiple opportunities to pay the health permit fee and has failed to do so,” the inspection reads.

Some medium-risk violations include decomposing carrots found in the basement, prep cooler in the main kitchen temped at 52 degrees and no food preparation sink.

Caravan on Smithfield Street is a Halal restaurant that features kebabs, gyros, chicken, breads and many more dishes.

As of July 18, the closure remains active on the county’s website. You can see any reinspection and other updates here .
