The Allegheny County Health Department announced that mosquito samples collected in Highland Park, Point Breeze, Homewood, and Wilkinsburg have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

The Health Department will treat the affected areas with a pesticide called Zenivex E20. Zenivex E20 is considered safe for humans and pets and is classified by the EPA as a low-risk insecticide. The treatment will involve the use of a truck-mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) sprayer, scheduled for Thursday, July 24th, from 8 pm to 11 pm. This effort aims to reduce the local mosquito population and minimize the risk of human transmission. In case of rain, the spraying will be rescheduled for the following evening, July 25th, during the same hours.

The West Nile Virus, transmitted by infected mosquitoes, typically surfaces during mosquito season, which spans from spring through fall. The most recent reported human case of West Nile Virus was in June 2024.

While many people infected with West Nile Virus do not exhibit symptoms, approximately one in five develop a fever and other symptoms, such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Less than one percent of infected individuals experience severe illness.

Currently, no vaccines or medications are available to prevent or treat West Nile Virus. Residents who suspect they or someone they know may have West Nile Virus should seek evaluation and diagnosis from a healthcare provider.

To help control the mosquito population, residents are encouraged to report mosquito breeding sites on both private and public properties. Reports can be made to the Allegheny County Health Department’s Housing and Community Environment Program by completing an online form or calling 412-350-4046.
