When the Pittsburgh Steelers traded for quarterback Justin Fields in April, they had already signed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal.
That means Fields will likely open up the 2024 NFL season as the Steelers’ backup. Barring unforeseen circumstances, of course.
However, that does not necessarily mean that Fields will remain on the bench.
As a matter of fact, Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski is predicting that Fields will end up usurping Wilson as the starter at some point this year and will establish himself as Pittsburgh’s franchise signal-caller moving forward.
“The Steelers will need to find out what they have at the game’s most important position before next offseason,” Sobleski wrote. “Fields still presents significant upside, with the ability to become something more than a simple scratch-off lottery ticket.”
Justin Fields will have to prove himself in 2024
One way or another, Fields will have to show the Steelers something in 2024, whether that’s in practice or actually getting regular snaps under center.
Why? Because Pittsburgh declined Fields’ fifth-year option for 2025, meaning he will be a free agent at the end of the season.
Of course, the Steelers can always just re-sign Fields and then acquire another quarterback, but they would probably like some clarity at the position before the following year.
Fields, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was originally selected by the Chicago Bears with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
He spent the first three years of his career with the Bears, and while he showed flashes of his potential, he wasn’t able to do it on a consistent basis.
Fields went just 10-28 as a starter in the Windy City, with his best season coming in 2023 when he threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while rushing for 657 yards and four scores over 13 starts (he missed four games with a dislocated thumb).
Chicago proceeded to trade Fields to Pittsburgh this past spring in order to clear the way for it to select Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick. The Steelers were able to acquire the 25-year-old for the cheap cost of a conditional sixth-round draft pick.
We’ll see if Justin Fields can carve out a sustainable career for himself in Steel City.
