Steelers may have no one but themselves to blame following Russell Wilson's reveal of injury cause

For the second day in a row , Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson sat out practice with: "Calf tightness."

Addressing the media after a fast Friday in Latrobe, Wilson got down to brass tax on when and how the injury occurred.

It's left many shaking their head.

Wilson injured calf during conditioning test

"We were doing a sled push thing and just got a little...tweaked it a little bit," Wilson told reporters following day two of camp in Latrobe. "So, just working hard and just sometimes things happen. But the good thing, the good news is that I feel good and we will get there in time. And the good thing is I'm getting a lot of the mental reps and throwing, throwing stuff on the side and the post-practice and all that as well."

Now, many are probably wondering why a soon-to-be 36-year-old QB is required to complete a conditioning test in the first place, but such is standard operating procedure around the NFL.

While the presumptive starting QB is often the most important person on the team, it doesn't mean he's above being in shape.

But the problem here isn't the principle, it's the method.

Couldn't Wilson have, I don't know, jogged around the field a few times, done a couple of gassers, or maybe even all-out sprints that covered the distance of the field to prove he was in shape?

Asking the man you signed to lead your offense to push sleds is...a little over the top.

I know he's mobile, but he's also in his mid-30s and plays QB. He doesn't need to practice generating torque and explosion the way the WRs and defensive linemen that push the sled on the regular are required to.

And sure, both Mike Tomlin and Russell Wilson have downplayed the injury, suggesting that he could have practiced on day one of camp. But Wilson also didn't give a definitive timetable for his return.

There was nothing imminent in his voice, nor Coach Tomlin's during Thursday's post-practice address .

"Russ woke up today and his calf was tight," Coach Tomlin told reporters after practice on Thursday. "It was my decision to sit him down today and create a little short-term discomfort for him, not allowing the small problem to become a bigger problem. He could be characterized as day-to-day. But on the flip side of that it was an awesome opportunity for Justin (Fields) and the challenge for our offense as a unit to deal with a little adversity at the outset...

"... He was excited about the opportunity to lead that first group out of the huddle and taking charge today."

We'll wait and see when Wilson is the one taking charge.
