Steelers Training Camp Takeaways: Wilson sits again, Fields bounces back on day two in Latrobe

Looking to build off a memorable opening to training camp, the Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up the work week with a good battle between the offense and defense.

The QB room was light again after Russell Wilson sat out for the second day in a row , making room for Justin Fields to continue to try and push for the starting role.

Here's more on Wilson, Fields, and everything else from day two of camp in Latrobe.

    Russell Wilson Sits Again

Wilson showed up to day two of camp with football pants on and shoes that mimicked cleats, but his hat gave it all away as the veteran QB would sit again out of precaution. Mike Tomlin told the media that he wanted to prevent a minor injury from becoming a major one, and thus Wilson was left watching for the second day in a row.

What that means for tomorrow is unknown, but it should be noted that as practice time shifts from 10:30 am to 2:00  p.m. over the weekend, it could give Wilson the extra time he needs to feel comfortable practicing.

The Steelers also don't put pads on until Tuesday, which for all meaningful purposes is when camp really begins, suggesting that Pittsburgh could play it safe and wait until next week to insert Wilson.

Justin Fields bounces back from a cold start

The Steelers started practice with their trademarked: "Seven Shots" for the first time, and it didn't go swimmingly for Fields. The defense would win 4-3 but Fields went 1-5 during his reps against the first-team defense, reportedly struggling with ball location and tipped passes.

Just needing to warm up, Fields bounced back strong, hitting George Pickens for a deep gain as seen in the clip above, after ripping a deep corner to Calvin Austin between two defenders and finishing by floating a ball right into Pat Freiermuth 's breadbasket in tight coverage.

We'll see if he can continue the trend or if Russell Wilson comes back and ends any QB competition before it can begin.

    D-Line Dominates

In both seven shots and during the team period, the big guys were able to get their paws up in time to knock down passes and caused multiple false starts including one by starting guard James Daniels.

Cam Heyward and rookie Logan Lee were among the agitators, but it was the man who made the next part of our report who is taking camp by strorm.

    Standouts Emerge

After dominating day one of practice, third-year pro DeMarvin Leal was a force yet again on Friday, swatting passes, running far downfield, and creating pressure. Now all of that has to be taken with a grain of salt since there is the absence of pads, but it's a good sign for a player who has struggled to integrate himself since being drafted in 2022.

Beyond Leal, CB Donte Jackson has been generating a lot of positive buzz after two days of camp. He and George Pickens have had their fair share of battles, but Jackson has come out on top a few times and forced a couple of pass breakups.

If he can continue, the Diontae Johnson trade may look like a good move after all.
