Pittsburgh Steelers' Chris Boswell struggling early on in training camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't seen a significant change in their kicker in almost a decade.

This is thanks to one-time Pro Bowler Chris Boswell, who has been their starter since his rookie season in 2015. The consistency speaks for itself, but things are not going his way early in Pittsburgh's training camp.

Steelers journalist Chris Adamski reported that Boswell's competition is thus far perfect while the veteran is hitting some roadblocks.

"Matthew Wright meanwhile has been perfect," Adamski wrote. "Boswell has 4 misses, the latest from 47 yards."

Despite exceeding expectations, Wright has some serious ground to make up before passing up Boswell for the starting job. It would take many more shanked kicks for the nine-year pro to drop down the depth chart. The woes are giving fans flashbacks to the dreaded 2018 season, where he hit just 65% of his field goals, missing 5 of 10 kicks from between 40 and 49 yards.

Alternatively, Wright is entering his third stint in Pittsburgh after bouncing around to other organizations. He played in three games during 2020, nailing his four field goal attempts. Fast forward to 2022, the Super Bowl champion went 12 of 14 on field goals, including one over 50 yards in another four matchups.
