Jackson Crossing vs Westwood Mall: Why one is thriving, and the other is not
JACKSON COUNTY, MI – In the 1980s, malls across the nation were the social hubs for teens, and Jackson’s Westwood Mall was no different. On a typical weekend, the mall was filled with people shopping, playing video games at the arcade, grabbing a soft pretzel or catching the latest movie. Joel E. Boothman, 54
Joel Eugene Boothman, 54, of Pioneer, Ohio passed away on July 17, 2024 at Parkview Hospital Randallia in Fort Wayne, Indiana, after a 10-year battle with Aplastic Anemia. He was a warrior! Joel was born on September 24, 1969 in Toledo, Ohio to JoAnn Boothman and was raised by his adoptive parents Hillis and Rose (Flightner) Boothman, Sr. Joel graduated from North Central High School in 1988. On October 15, 1994 he married Leigh M. Short in Archbold, Ohio and she survives.

Kaylie Simpson Crowned 2024 Miss River Raisin Festival
Blissfield, MI – Kaylie Simpson has been crowned Miss River Raisin Festival for 2024. The 25-year-old is the daughter of Malissa and Matthew Simpson is an Adrian College Athletic Training/Sports Medicine masters program graduate. Kaylie is an elementary ministry director and athletic trainer. Her service initiative is “B.E.I.N.G. There for Youth: Believing, Educating, Inspiring, and Nurturing Growth.” She performed a jazz dance at the scholarship competition. Simpson will now compete for Miss Michigan. Lenawee County Clerk Issues In-Person Early Voting Information
Lenawee County, MI – The Lenawee County Clerk’s Office has released information about early in-person voting for the August 6th Primary Election. A post on the Clerk’s page of the Lenawee County website says that voters can visit an early voting site to cast a ballot in person during the early voting period. In Lenawee County, there is a centralized early voting site located at the Human Services Building in Adrian.

Jo Dee Messina has plotted the final leg of her “Heads Carolina, Tails California Tour.”. After a two-year run, including a celebratory six-date New England homecoming, Messina plans kick off the last round of dates at the Dam Jam Music Festival in Goddard, Kansas this Friday (July 19). Swinging in Fremont
Warm sunny skies and a muggy Friday and Saturday night greeted attendees of Fremont Music Fest. On Saturday a large crowd gathered for the annual parade, which once again brought honors for Swager Communications and also to Cardinal Glass. The music started at noon and went through the night with a fireworks show to close out the annual event, which is 29 years strong in Fremont.

Montpelier's Smeltzer brothers finish atop divisions at LJGA event
LIMA — Brothers Kenneth and Malachi Smeltzer were the best in their respective divisions in Tuesday’s Gray’s Cappie Sportswear Open at Springbrook Golf Club in Lima. The Smeltzers won the boys 16-18 and 14-15 divisions to highlight a strong showing for Montpelier’s trio in the Lima Junior Golf Association event.

Jackson’s Biggest Folly? Progress Place, 1964-1983
I remember Jackson's “Progress Place” vividly. Boy, how I remember. It was considered by a majority of residents to be the worst thing that ever happened to downtown Jackson. Literally, ever. When they were finished building this in 1964, I remember having to walk way too far (I thought) to get to my favorite downtown places – like Woolworth's, the Capitol Theater, and the shoe shop.
