To me, one of the more fascinating things about folks who perform at the Opera House is their observations about visiting Maine and Boothbay Harbor in particular. People come from far and wide to our wonderful stage and, in many cases, for a first time visit to Maine. The experience of visiting here is interesting, in that these visitors offer us a view of ourselves from a unique vantage. In many cases, performers will arrive a day or so before they share their talents, which often results in some revealing experiences. Garrison Keillor did not disappoint in that regard. Maine is not your grandmother’s “Lake Wobegon!”

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Curtis E. Harding of Naples, Florida and Boothbay Harbor on July 28, 2024. Curt was born April 18, 1934 and raised in Sudbury, Massachusetts where he was an avid sportsman, excelling in basketball, tennis and skiing. As a young adult, he learned to sail on Cape Cod, becoming the major foundation for his future life. As a teen, he met his future wife, Jeanne, while attending and graduating from Sudbury High School.

Elizabeth Pettengill “Betsy” Edgerton died peacefully in Brunswick, Maine on July 5, 2024 at the age of 88. In her own words, “I’ve had a wonderful life!”. Betsy was born in Portland, Maine on Oct. 7, 1935 to Louise Merriam Pettengill and Richard Eaton Pettengill. She grew up in Falmouth Foreside, spending many happy summers at Ocean Point in East Boothbay. After graduating from Portland High School, she briefly attended Maine College of Art & Design before transferring to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

19th annual Westport Island Shore Run 10K Road Race Aug. 18
Registration is still open for the 19th annual Westport Island Shore Run 10K Road Race that will take place Sunday, Aug. 18 on bridge-accessible Westport Island, Maine. "Maine's Best Little 10K Road Race" will start at 9 a.m; the 3.5 mile "Fun Walk" will start at 8:30 a.m. The forecast for this exciting 10K road race is for fair skies and cool weather. The USATF-certified race winds through scenic pine and fir tree forests and over two bridges spanning inlets to Heal Cove and Montsweag Bay.
Graduations
Grace Acton graduated summa cum laude from Bates College with a major in interdisciplinary studies and a minor in Russian. Acton also received the Bates Senior Scholar Award for combined academic achievement and sports participation. Charlie Pappas graduated from Bates College with a major in history.
Victim in Fiery Crash Identified as Richmond, Maine, Man
According to an article on the WGME website, a 20-year-old Richmond man has been identified as the victim of a fiery crash that happened on August 3. According to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, Mark J. Judd of Richmond was the driver who was killed in the crash, which happened near Thorofare Road on Route 201.
