Pittston Area softball pitcher added to her honors with repeat selections for a pair of awards.

The Carnegie Mellon commit was named last weekend as the state Class 5A Pitcher of the Year by Pennsylvania Sports Writers and as the Times Leader Player of the Year. It was the third straight time Adams was named as the state’s top Class 5A pitcher and the second time that she led the Times Leader team of top Wyoming Valley Conference players.

Adams struck out a WVC record 834 in a career that included a shutout in the state championship game to complete an unbeaten season in 2022 and a trip back to the state final this season after capturing WVC Division 1 and District 2 Class 5A titles.

Opponents batted just .081 this season against Adams, who went 20-2 with 287 strikeouts and an 0.41 earned run average in 135 innings. She also led the offense with 30 hits and four triples while batting .435.

Adams was one of four Lady Patriots honored by state sports writers.

Senior third baseman Tori Stephenson, junior first baseman Gabby Gorzkowski and sophomore outfielder Lili Hintze all made the second team.

Stephenson batted a team-high .446 with five doubles and 19 RBI.

Gorzkowski batted .431 with four triples, 15 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Hintze had nine doubles, 19 runs scored and a .426 average.

All three also made the Times Leader All-WVC team along with Wyoming Area shortstop Addison Gaylord, who batted .400 with nine doubles.

The all-state team selections included Old Forge seniors Karen Sickle and Talia Piragas, who made the first team in Class A after leading the Lady Devils to a district title and state semifinal appearance.

Sickle struck out 259 while walking just 43 and posting a 1.43 earned run average in her fourth year as the team’s pitcher.

Piragas, a four-year catcher, batted .452 and scored 35 runs to lead the team. She hit five home runs.
