Extreme heat causes train service delays for NYC subways, NJ Transit

NEW YORK (PIX11) – If your morning commute includes riding the rails, you may want to consider a Plan B.

The A, E, F and J subway lines were running with delays in both directions Wednesday due to a loss of power at the Delancy Street-Essex Street train station, according to the MTA. Normal service has since resumed on those lines.

J line customers who were looking for service between Manhattan and Brooklyn could’ve taken a No. 4, L, N, Q or R train.

NJ Transit also warned Tuesday night that the extreme heat is taking a major toll on its infrastructure and that normal service for the rest of the week is in jeopardy.

“We are currently experiencing heat-related rail equipment issues to the air-conditioning units and other electronic components due to extreme and excessive temperatures. Customers may experience delays and it may be necessary to cancel or combine trips for the next 48-72 hrs,” the agency wrote on X .

Crews are working around the clock on repairs in hopes of resuming regular service as quickly as possible, according to NJ Transit. Riders should be prepared for workarounds in case other mass transit agencies see similar disruptions.
