NEW YORK (PIX11) – Ever had to wait at a bus stop with no shade in the grueling summer heat in New York City?

That’s because only one in five bus stops has shelter, according to transit advocacy group Transportation Alternatives. The group released a map of the city’s hottest bus stops with the help of NASA.

The boroughs with the hottest bus stops are the Bronx and Queens, according to the report. The Bronx is home to the seven hottest bus stops in the city, being 11 degrees hotter than the citywide average.

In addition, over half of the Big Apple’s 400 hottest bus stops are in Queens, according to Transportation Alternatives. Minorities and people below the federal poverty line are more likely to live near the hottest bus stops, the report said.

There are 15,000 bus stops in New York City and only 20% of stops have shelters, according to Transportation Alternatives.

The group suggests installing bus shelters with seating and countdown clocks at high-priority stops, planting trees to create shade and requiring the Department of Transportation to factor in extreme heat when dealing with transportation infrastructure.
