TRIBECA, Manhattan (PIX11) — Residents in one Manhattan neighborhood say they want police cars off their sidewalks.
Tribeca residents took to Reddit on Tuesday to air their frustrations over NYPD cars parked on the West Broadway sidewalk. Other New Yorkers also chimed in, saying the parked squad cars in their neighborhoods block trucks from turning and pedestrians from crossing.
Adams administration ‘will address’ NYPD illegally parking police cruisers: official “The NYPD has taken over the West Broadway sidewalk. It’s time to take this space back,” read a post from the account NYC Bike Lanes on the social media site X .
The post mainly refers to the portion of West Broadway that runs from Canal Street to Sixth Avenue. PIX11 News walked the stretch from Canal Street to Worth Street on Thursday morning and found some squad cars parked on the sidewalk on Ericsson Place.
New Yorkers could call out NYPD for illegal parking, new bill proposed A representative from Councilmember Christopher Marte’s office told PIX11 News that they receive regular complaints about police parking in the district because of its proximity to 1 Police Plaza, the NYPD’s headquarters.
“…the difficulty is the enforcing agency is the agency that’s violating the law – so we’ve been advocating for legislation to return parking tickets to DOT so that we can have better enforcement,” the representative said in a statement.
More Local News The Department of Transportation only issues permits to block the sidewalk for construction. A spokesperson said the situation was brought to the NYPD’s attention.
In April, the Department of Justice sent a warning to the NYPD .
“Parking around precincts and NYPD facilities is a persistent challenge due to our thriving, complex city and the limited space we all must share,” said a spokesperson for the NYPD. “But the NYPD strives each day to achieve a balance as we continue to work toward solutions.”
Meanwhile, residents in Tribeca and other neighborhoods say they plan to report sidewalk parking to 311 until the city resolves the issue.
