See it: Tiny black and brown kitten rescued from busy Long Island highway

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – A tiny black and brown kitten was rescued Thursday morning from a busy Long Island highway, video obtained by PIX11 News shows.

John Debacker, the vice president of Long Island Cat/Kitten Soultion, Inc. , received a call around 8 a.m. about a kitten huddle along the center divider of the Wantagh State Parkway.

“I raced to the scene and arrived within 30 minutes,” Debacker told PIX11. ”I missed the kitten on my first pass but looped around and spotted her on my second pass. I immediately called the state police, and they arrived within 20 minutes to shut down the highway while I did the rescue.”

Debacker crossed the busy highway as cars from the other side sped by. He used a net to reach for the tiny kitten but missed on his first attempt. The kitten then ran away toward a field. Debacker chased after the cat and eventually caught it despite some hissing and meowing.

The rescued kitten, Wanda, was transported to a local animal shelter, where she will be available for adoption, Debacker said.
