Two shot, including woman closing up smoke shop, in the Bronx: NYPD

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, the Bronx (PIX11) — Two people were injured, including a woman closing up her smoke shop, when shots rang out near a Bronx deli early Friday morning, police said.

Cops responded to the shooting near 83 West Farms Rd. in University Heights at around 1:20 a.m. and found a 43-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back, according to the NYPD. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A 37-year-old woman was grazed in the right thigh while closing up her smoke shop in the vicinity of the gunfire, police said. The woman went to the hospital for treatment and told cops she was injured in the shooting.

Authorities believe the 43-year-old man was shot during a fight with a group of people.

Police are searching for several suspects and have not yet made any arrests, according to the NYPD.

The incident happened in the confines of the 52nd Precinct, where there has been a 115% increase in people shot this year compared to 2023, according to NYPD data. Shooting incidents are also up 50% in the area.
