CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (PIX11) – A second suspect has been charged in connection with the death of a 13-year-old boy who was shot and killed in Brooklyn on his way home from a Nets game in February, authorities said.

Jared McCauley, 21, is charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the killing of Troy Gill, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

Gill was fatally shot near New York Avenue and Bergen Street outside Brower Park in Crown Heights around 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 29, authorities said. Investigators believe the drive-by shooting was a retaliatory gang-related hit, according to the NYPD.

The shooting is believed to be in retaliation for the kidnapping and beating earlier that day of McCauley, who is associated with the Woo gang, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

Investigators said Gill was a member of the Drench Gang and was targeted , according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. It was unclear if Gill, who had a Drench gang tattoo, was involved in the kidnapping incident involving McCauley.

The teen FaceTimed his mother as he was running down the block after getting shot, police said.

Gill was just a couple blocks from home and his family rushed out to search for him after the heartbreaking call, authorities said. The teen was then found on the sidewalk by a passerby walking his dog.

The boy was unable to speak when officers got to the scene. Cops tried to save him before he was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

During the investigation, police identified a white jeep that two suspects rented in Philadelphia. The suspects fired eight shots at Gill, police said.

The other suspect, 20-year-old Sheik Koureichi, was arrested in July and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in Gill’s death , police said.

“As alleged, these defendants went on a revenge spree that took the life of a young boy. This type of senseless retaliatory gang violence is claiming too many lives, including children, and my office, along with the NYPD, is focused on solving each one of those shootings and holding those who commit them responsible,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement.
