PATERSON, N.J. (PIX11) — A new type of convenience store is open and doing business in Paterson, N.J.

Located at the corner of 12th Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard, “A Better Market” offers fresh produce at prices lower than most grocery stores.

“I’m going straight to the resource and bringing it to the community,” said owner Shana Manradge. “Therefore, they’re getting a better bargain.”

Manradge, a Paterson native, said the idea behind “A Better Market” began while grocery shopping during COVID.

“A box of Cheerios was $9.54,” said Manradge. “And I said no.”

Manradge, who had recently been laid off from her job in the medical field, said she used the time to start researching farms and food prices.

“When the kids were on their Chromebooks learning, I was on my laptop learning,” she said.

Manradge developed relationships with farmers and small business owners and began selling produce out of her garage at prices cheaper than conventional grocery stores.

    “I would say we’re between a 50 to 60% discount,” said Manradge.

When the city told her she needed a brick-and-mortar store to do business, “A Better Market” was born.

“I’m able to now get fresh and healthy stuff straight from the farm at a reasonable cost,” said Manradge.

Prices are not only lower than traditional grocery stores, but they’re structured differently as well. Food is priced by the piece, not by the pound.

“I want to make it as streamlined as possible so people will know when they get to the register how much they’re paying,” said Manradge.

Manradge said the shelves were virtually wiped clean on Saturday following the store’s grand opening, demonstrating the demand for affordable, healthy options.

Customer Lauren Nance spent $36 on three full bags of produce and snacks, which she estimates would have cost between $50 and $55 in a traditional grocery store.

“Even though I might need to drive from the other side of town to come here, it’s worth it,” said Nance. “Cities like Paterson not only need this but deserve this.”

Manradge plans to open mobile produce stands in the future and is currently awaiting approval to accept SNAP/EBT benefits.
