NEW YORK (PIX11) – Heat and muggy conditions will cover the tri-state area on Wednesday, with feel-like temperatures expected to reach over 100 degrees .

Nassau County officials will also open at least three cooling centers on Long Island, with one in Uniondale operating 24 hours a day.

The forecast prompted the city of Newark, N.J. to activate a code red weather warning . Five northern New Jersey counties: Passaic, Bergen, Essex, Union and Hudson are under heat advisories.

Gov. Phil Murphy released the state’s new extreme heat resilience plan last month, which outlines a series of actions to protect the public. The plan includes expanding the state’s cooling center network and developing heat-related worker safety standards.

Remember to stay hydrated, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, limit your time outdoors if possible and have a cool place to go.
