NEW YORK (PIX11) – More changes are coming to McGuinness Boulevard.

The busy street is a main connection between Queens and Brooklyn and a local neighborhood thoroughfare. Neighbors took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the latest change in plans.

Make McGuinness Safer held a community bike ride. The organization wants to see additional improvements that had been part of earlier plans, including reducing vehicle travel to one lane in each direction during the day.

“The mayor has refused to take the advice of his DOT and make it safer. We are really disappointed,” said Greenpoint resident Bronwyn Breitner.

Another group that organized to oppose some design changes, Keep McGuiness Moving, issued a new statement about the plans.

“Common sense changes to improve safety have always been the goal. Unfortunately, the loss of hundreds of parking spaces and adding a bike lane to a major truck route only causes further chaos,” the group wrote.

Mayor Eric Adams and his administration spoke about compromise at a media briefing.

“Both sides are unhappy, but there is something to be happy about along McGuinness Boulevard. The bike lane and having the floating parking are going to have the effect of slowing down traffic,” said Deputy Mayor Meera Joshi.

The latest city plan will also create loading zones, improve intersections and redesign access to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. During evening hours, one lane for travel is supposed to become a lane for parking.

Crews will work on the new protected bike lane extension in September.
