NEW YORK (PIX11) – If you’re hitting the road this Labor Day weekend, get ready to save a few bucks at the pump.

Gas prices across the U.S. are lower than they were before last year’s holiday weekend, according to AAA.

The national average price per gallon is $3.36. That’s a 46-cent drop from last year.

If you’re not planning to drive and are flying, you may want to show up at the airport earlier than usual. A record 6.7 million travelers are expected to use the airports at major crossings in the tri-state area this weekend, according to TSA.

More than 17 million people are expected to be screened at U.S. airports through next Wednesday: a record for Labor Day Weekend, per TSA.

The MTA is adding a few early get a way trains to help New Yorkers kick off the three-day weekend. The LIRR will operate on a normal Saturday schedule, but also operate on the Saturday schedule on Sunday to accommodate the influx of travelers.

Metro-North will operate three early getaway trains on Friday on several lines.

The MTA has paused all routine construction on bridges and tunnels to help traffic flow.

NJ Transit will operate extra rail service on Labor Day, but with numerous disruptions paired with Amtrak signal issues throughout this past workweek, people are worried about a potential travel nightmare during the long weekend.

The best time to hit the road is early Friday morning. The worst time to travel is anytime after 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday morning, according to AAA.

To get home, it’s recommended to drive home late Monday or on Tuesday.
