NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – Monday is your last chance to ride on NJ Transit trains, buses and light rail for free .

The agency’s fare holiday started on Aug. 26 and lasts through Sept. 2. You will be charged a fare for any NJ Transit ride starting on Tuesday.

The free fares came after numerous disruptions in NJ Transit service this summer. The agency’s on-time performance was 69% in June, Gov. Phil Murphy previously said.

Delays and cancellations continued through the fare holiday, with track maintenance, equipment availability and mechanical issues cited as the cause.

NJ Transit is also offering a 25% discount on a September monthly pass if you purchased a monthly pass for August. You can redeem the discount in the mobile app, at ticket vending machines or ticket windows.

The agency previously approved a 15% fare hike due to a financial deficit caused by the COVID pandemic and a dip in ridership. Fares will increase by 3% every summer, according to NJ Transit.
