CREAM RIDGE, N.J. (PIX11) — A September 11th survivor from New Jersey is working to keep alive the memories of the friends and colleagues she lost nearly 23 years ago.

Donna Spera’s ‘ Golfing for Heroes ’ tournament just wrapped up its seventh annual event on Monday afternoon.

“Every year, it just gets more successful,” said Spera, who was on the 78th floor of the South Tower when the second plane hit. Her colleagues were instantly killed but Spera narrowly – and miraculously – survived.

“It’s been challenging, mentally and physically,” said Spera. “Twenty-three years, it still feels like yesterday.”

The tournament started as an idea, hatched over drinks with friends, and cobbled together in just three months in 2018. It has grown every year since, and now includes a second tournament in Florida. “People sign up as early as January, February,” said Spera.

To date, the tournament has raised nearly $200,000 for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Many of the golfers have participated every year.

“The first year was a little difficult because it was in the pouring rain,” said golfer John McGowan. “And then after that, she’s had beautiful weather every year since.”

“The best part is that we’re all joined here together and celebrating everything – life itself,” said golfer Gordon Lindner.

Spera also sees the tournament as a celebration. “It is for 9/11, but it’s a happy occasion because we remember everybody,” said Spera.
