Car stuck in Gravesend after leak causes sinkhole: Officials

GRAVESEND, Brooklyn (PIX11) – A sinkhole opened up shortly after a water leak on a Gravesend road, according to officials.

The leak happened around 3:47 a.m. near Bay 37th Street and Cropsey Avenue, according to the FDNY. Then around 4:11 a.m., the NYPD responded to a sinkhole in the road, police said.

There were no injuries, according to the FDNY. However, a tow truck was needed to remove one vehicle from the collapsed roadway, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Protection.

City officials shut off water in the area to stop the leak affecting the street, according to the DEP. It was not immediately clear what caused the leak, according to the DEP. Repairs were complete and water was turned back on by 3 p.m.

Three residential and seven private properties had their water cut in the process, according to the DEP.
