    Why is Times Square called Times Square?

    NEW YORK (PIX11) – Where did Times Square get its name? The answer may seem obvious once you know.

    Times Square is named after the New York Times newspaper, which built its headquarters there between Broadway and Seventh Avenue and 42nd and 43rd streets in the early 1900s, according to the Museum of the City of New York .

    Then-New York City Mayor George McClellan renamed the area from Long Acre Square to Times Square in 1904, according to the New York Times .

    The newspaper eventually moved its headquarters less than a block away in 1913 after outgrowing its building, according to the New York Times.

    Times Square is one of New York City’s most popular tourist attractions. The bustling destination attracts more than 200,000 visitors on average each day, according to the Times Square Alliance .
