NEW YORK (PIX11)—Mexican Independence Day is around the corner, and New York City is celebrating with a parade in Brooklyn on Sunday on the eve before September 16.

Celebrations are held to pay homage to Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla, who, in a speech, urged followers to revolt against the Spaniards who ruled Mexico at the time. September 16 celebrates the rebellion that fueled a decade-long war that led to Mexico’s independence, according to the History Channel .
