“It’s an epic honor that this South Bronx, Nuyorican and that others like me can see this and see that it is possible,” Colón-Zayas said backstage, on becoming the first Latina to win best supporting actress in a comedy, for “The Bear.” “Embrace who you are.”

After her name was called on stage, the actress, who is married to actor David Zayas, stated her husband told her to write a speech.

“How could I have thought it would be possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett,” Colón-Zayas said as she accepted the award on the stage of the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Colón-Zayas sat down with PIX11’s own Hazel Sanchez to discuss her Emmy nomination in August.

She is the first Latina to win in the category.
