NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Sunday marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month in New York City, bringing free concerts, parades, dance classes and more to all five boroughs.
The events will last through Oct. 15, marking a celebration of Americans with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
Things To Do Around NYC Mexican Independence Day parades filled the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan on Sunday, a day that marked the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Chile also celebrates its independence within the month on Sept. 18 and Belize on Sept. 21.
Here are some events across New York City for Hispanic Heritage Month:
- Hispanic Day Parade
- Where: 37th Avenue in Queens
- When: Sept. 29 from 12-3 p.m.
- What: Catch marching bands, colorful floats, music and dance performances, Hispanic cuisine and art at a parade in the middle of the month-long celebration.
- Free folk concert
- Where: Greenbelt Nature Center in Staten Island
- When: Sept. 21 from 12-4 p.m.
- What: Jose Raul (Tito) Ocasio will do a free performance honoring Jose Rivera alongside artists Bob Wright and Linda Hickman.
- Viva broadway
- Where: 145 W 45th Street in Manhattan
- When: Sept. 15-Oct. 15
- What: A month-long exhibit celebrating Latino and Hispanic heritage throughout Broadway, which will feature costumes, props and discussions.
- NY Latino Film Festival
- Where: Theaters across NYC, including Regal Union Square
- When: Sept. 15 – Sept. 22
- What: Multiple film showings and panels concluding with a block party and award ceremony on Dyckman Street.
- Salsa classes
- Where: Bronx Library Center
- When: Sept 16, 23, 30 10 a.m.; Oct. 5 2 p.m.
- What: A free hour-long dance class for people ages 18 and older. Registration is required.
- Cooking class
- Where: Essex Market in Manhattan
- When: Oct. 12 at 3:30 p.m.
- In collaboration with The Loisaida Center, Essex Market will host a cooking class where participants will learn how to cook the Puerto Rican national dish Arroz con Gandules.
- Latinx Festival: Timeless Traditions, Culture, and Ancestry
- Where: Children’s Museum of Manhattan
- When: Sept. 17- Sept. 22
- What: Perfect for children, the festival will allow visitors to create art, toy designs, songs and stories that focus on Latinx traditions and culture.
