BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – There’s a new twist in a wild police-involved shooting at a Brooklyn subway station over the weekend that left an NYPD officer and several bystanders injured.

Investigators said they’re looking for a man who allegedly stole a knife from the crime scene. The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect on Monday.

Police had initially said they recovered a knife from the scene. On Monday, police said another man picked it up, put it in his pocket, and walked away.

The chaotic scene unfolded inside the Sutter Avenue subway station in Brownsville around 3 p.m. on Sunday.

NYPD officers approached a 37-year-old man for alleged fare evasion and followed him onto the platform, where they told him to stop moving, police said. The suspect allegedly said, “I am going to kill you if you don’t stop following me,” according to authorities.

The suspect then hopped onto a northbound train, and the officers deployed their Tasers, but they were not effective, police said.

The suspect then got off the train and allegedly charged at the officers with a knife, according to the NYPD. The officers opened fire, shooting the suspect, another NYPD officer and two bystanders.

The suspect was hit several times in the stomach, police said. The officer was shot in the chest, a bystander was shot in the head, and another bystander was shot in the leg, according to authorities.

Police have not charged the fare evasion suspect as of Tuesday morning.

Submit tips to police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting crimestoppers.nypdonline.org , downloading the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577. Spanish-speaking callers are asked to dial 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
