WOODBURY, N.Y. (PIX11) – New York State Police have announced that a man accused of crashing a stolen car and then running into the woods in Woodbury Wednesday is dead.

Ali Ali was accused of crashing the stolen vehicle on the New York State Thruway near Exit 16 Wednesday, police said. The car caught fire and Ali ran off into a wooded area, prompting a manhunt for the man police said was “armed and dangerous.”

Troopers were trying to stop Ali before he allegedly crashed, police said.

As police searched, schools in the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District were placed on “lock out,” meaning no one was allowed in or out of campuses while school was in session.

Police solicited the public’s help to find Ali, and around 12:35 p.m., he was recorded on a trail camera near Highland Mills.

Ali was located in a densely wooded area in Highland Mills at around 2 p.m., according to State Police. There was a confrontation, during which Ali was shot and killed, police said.

As this was a police-involved shooting, the New York State Attorney General’s Office is now investigating the case. Police have yet to confirm whether Ali was armed at the time of the confrontation.
