Acting HUD secretary visits Brooklyn NYCHA development, announces new funding

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — Adrianne Todman, the acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, visited public housing in New York City on Monday, touring several Brooklyn apartments and speaking with housing advocates.

Todman visited the Berry Street Houses in Williamsburg with NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt. Todman told PIX11 News she chose the Berry Street Houses for a reason: to see funding in action.

Todman also made three big announcements. First, she announced $37 million for hundreds of new housing vouchers. Secondly, she announced $7.5 million for lead abatement. Thirdly, Todman took to the roof to announce a new policy for more solar energy all across public housing in New York City.

Todman said the new $37 million in federal funding will go specifically for Tenant Protection Vouchers. They are special vouchers used to help families get repairs.

Todman said there is a nearly $1 billion program to help make affordable homes greener, more sustainable, and climate-resilient. It’s called the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program .

Additionally, the Funding Navigator helps builders and organizations find all the funding, assistance, and policies the administration offers to help enhance the energy efficiency, climate resilience, health, and environmental nature of your property.
