Developer pulls out of high-rise project near Brooklyn Botanic Garden

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – The developer planning to build a high-rise building near the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is now pulling out of the project.

The move comes just as the controversial plan got the first round of New York City Council approval.

The plans for the building would have cast a shadow on the flowers and greenery that depend on sunshine.

But there was a compromise. The building’s height was shortened from 14 to 10 stories and now has fewer apartment units.

“The city now, through these modifications, have made any sort of project here unworkable,” said David Rosenberg, an attorney for the developer. “We are not going to be able to get financing, and if we can’t get financing, we are not going to be able to deliver on the commitments that we’ve made to the community for the union jobs, the affordable housing, the improvements to Jackie Robinson Playground, and the support for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.”

The developer said there is no way to appeal the New York City Council vote.
