Brooklyn neighborhood named among coolest in the world

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A New York City neighborhood has been crowned as one of the world’s coolest.

Flatbush took the No. 17 spot on Time Out Magazine’s list this year.

“Flatbush has its own gravitational pull. The neighborhood’s bevy of Black-owned businesses, from popular watering holes to restaurants that slap, its perfect proximity to arguably the city’s best park, and its rich cultural landscape all play into why it’s New York’s coolest neighborhood right now,” Time Out Editor Shaye Weaver wrote.

This is the seventh year a New York City neighborhood has been ranked one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world. The West Village, Astoria, Bed-Stuy, Chelsea, Ridgewood, and Fort Greene have made the list in the past.

The name Flatbush comes from the Dutch, who called it Vlacke Bos, which means a flat area with bushes, according to The Bowery Boys .
