Chelsea community honors crossing guard killed in subway altercation

New York (PIX11) – In a touching tribute to a beloved school crossing guard, the corner of 26th Street and Tenth Avenue in Chelsea has been officially named “Richie’s Corner” in memory of Richard Henderson.

The ceremony, held Thursday morning, brought together family and friends to honor Henderson, who tragically lost his life in January while attempting to break up an argument over loud music on a subway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

“This means so much to me and my family. My husband is a legacy, but to have the street sign after him is just mind-blowing. It’s heartwarming.” said Jakeba Dockery, Henderson’s wife.

The event was marked by heartfelt speeches and fond memories of Henderson. Dozens of supporters gathered, wearing black shirts emblazoned with “Richard’s Way” to commemorate his life and impact on the community.

Henderson’s character was one of kindness and bravery. Dockery reflected on her late husband’s nature.

“He don’t like bullies. He don’t like altercation. He’s a friendly person. He stopped a violence person. He just all about love”.

The street naming ceremony has provided a sense of permanence and pride for Henderson’s family. Dockery shared, “My grandchildren, my great-grandchildren, we all get to see his name. Forever Legacy. It’s wonderful.”

Richard Henderson Jr., Henderson’s son, added his thoughts, saying, “I definitely miss my pops. This is him; he should have a street name. This is everything he would want as a person and as a man, everything he supports. This corner represents him”.

To continue Henderson’s legacy of community service, Dockery announced the establishment of a nonprofit organization called Richie’s Way. This organization aims to give back to the community and children. More information can be found here .
