WOODBURY, N.Y. (PIX11) – Hundreds of animals were rescued from abusive and unsafe conditions at a home on Long Island, police said.

Staff had to wear hazmat suits to enter the home in Woodbury due to the intense fumes and piles of garbage, according to the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Video showed them removing cages of birds from the house. They say there were also dogs and turtles living in filthy conditions.

“I have never seen a situation as horrendous and hard as this with these poor animals, these birds, who happen to be very intelligent, are living in a lifestyle that you can’t comprehend. It’s horrible. It’s filthy in there. The windows are dirty. The air is bad,” said Gary Rogers with the Nassau County SPCA.

Officials said the more than 200 birds and other animals are now being treated for several health issues.

The homeowner was arrested on animal abuse charges.
